Product Description
Deriving its name from the Flemish, the Bouvier des Flandres is the rough-coated, hard-working cow-herder of Belgium and France, whose origins trace back one thousand years. The modern Bouvier des Flandres, rough and gruff in appearance, is a talented multi-purpose dog, a formidable protection dog and a loyal family companion. Regarded as a great dog for children, despite his stature and strength, the Bouvier possesses a steady demeanor and a reliable character. Given proper training, this confident canine can become a terrific family pet and guardian. Written by Belgian breed expert and renowned international show judge, Dr. Robert Pollet, this new Comprehensive Owners Guide paints a detailed portrait of the Bouviers history and character and discusses the breed standard, puppy selection and care, basic obedience and house-training and much more. Bouvier owners will welcome the authors insightful chapters on everyday care for the adult dog as well as the authoritative healthcare chapter written by Dr. Lowell Ackerman discussing preventive care, inoculations, selecting a vet and much more. Whether you are a newly smitten Bouvier admirer or a long-time breeder and fancier, this new Kennel Club Book will not disappoint you in your search for accurate, up-to-date information about this remarkable breed.

4 out of 5 stars Bouviers are Great!   June 22, 2008
This is a great book for new Bouvier owners! I have some experience with Bouviers already, so some of the content was not applicable, however there is a nice history and information about showing Bouvs. It is a nice resource for those starting with a new Bouv puppy and for someone interested in some great pictures and descriptions of the standard and history.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover   June 6, 2008
This is a pretty good Bouvier "starter book", especially since there aren't many devoted just to the Bouvier des Flandres breed. However, I do think Jim Engel's book is still the best Bouvier book on the market.

I find it humorous (and odd) that the book discourages buying light colored Bouviers, especially very pale ones, and says not to buy a puppy that is fawn--only black to dark grey--(the coat does tend to change with time) and yet there are two fawn Bouviers on the cover.

Though fawn (as in light deer colored, like a fawn) is an acceptable Bouvier color, blonde, buff, cream or white is not and is considered a serious fault, as are chocolate brown Bouviers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for "Bouvier Beginners"   May 9, 2008

This is one of only a handful of books specifically about the Bouvier des Flandres breed of dogs, and the most recently written book in English that I have been able to find.

It has a very handy format, is well illustrated, very easy to read and offers important facts listed in quickly scanned boxes on almost every page. Everything is covered: history, characteristics, puppy & adult care including training, grooming, and health, as well as showing your Bouvier if that is your thing. The health care section includes excellent descriptions and pictures of the various parasites dogs can get. I keep this book within easy reach around the house for quick reference.

I would definitely recommend this particular book if you are researching the breed before choosing a dog; it is an excellent overview of all important aspects of ownership while not being too detailed in terms of the family trees of today's Bouviers in shows and competitions (for that information, turn to "Bouvier Des Flanders: The Dogs of Flandres Fields" by James R. Engle, 1991).

We recently purchased this book along with a Bouv pup, 8 weeks old then. This so far in all the checking out we have done has proved to be the BEST Bouvier book on the market. So if you are thiking of purchasing a Bouv read this book from front to back and it will answer any question you have. Our pup is now 7months old and thanks to this book we are still learning. Excellent read.

This is a nice book. Especially, when you are still in the "research phase" of finding out if a Bouvier is the dog for you. We currently live in The Netherlands and took this book to our new puppies breeder and he also thought it was "a very good book." This book is easy to read and has nice heavy pages. A very good beginner book with everything you need in it, from history to fleas!
